The four corners where Canal Street crossed Market Street made up the venerable "public square", the respectable end of town. The other square in Canal Fulton, where "old 21" (Canal Street) and 93 (Cherry Street) crossed was known as Brimstone Corners. An 1835 map of Canal Fulton refers to Market Street west of Canal Street as Liberty Street, and it was known as Liberty Street well into the twentieth century. Banks, grocery and dry goods stores, and hotels dominated Public Square, while Brimstone Corners catered to a more nefarious crowd with saloons and billiard halls and the opera house anchoring that end of town.
